MASTER CYLINDER-16

CONSTRUCTION

The master cylinder is so-called 'heart' of the hydraulic brake system. It has two chambers, a reservoir and a compression chamber. Other important parts are the piston, return spring, rubber seals, and check valve (one way valve) push rod.

WORKING

When the brake pedal is pressed, the push rod moves the piston forward. When the piston passes the bypass port, the fluid inside the compression chamber is compressed and the check valve is opened and pumped into the wheel cylinders. When the pedal is released, the piston moves backwards with the help of the return spring. However, since the check valve is closed for a few seconds, the pumped fluid cannot return to the compression chamber. This is due to the inertia of the brake fluid and the pressure of the compression spring. This results in a vacuum in the compression chamber, which deflects the primary seal inwards and transports the fluid from the rear of the piston to the compression chamber through the piston hole. This eliminates the possibility of air intrusion into the system. When the piston moves backwards again, the check valve vibrates from its seat and as a result the fluid pumped in the pipelines reaches the entire compression chamber. Thus the excess fluid at this time when the compression chamber is full enters the reservoir through the passport. The cap is vented to maintain atmospheric pressure inside the reservoir. The secondary seal is used to prevent fluid from leaking out through the rear of the piston. The stop washer stops the rear movement of the piston. The sur clip prevents the stop washer from being pushed out. The fluid required for pumping enters the compression chamber through the intake port. The function of the rubber boot is to prevent water, dust and dirt from entering the master cylinder. The push rod is connected to the brake pedal by means of suitable linkages.

CENTRIFUGAL CLUTCH

MAIN PARTS 1. Fly wheel 2. Clutch plate 3. Clutch shaft 4. Pressure plate 5. Clutch spring 6. Bell crank lever 7. Centrifugal weight 8. Crank shaft CONSTRUCTION In this type of clutch, centrifugal force is used to keep the clutch in the engaged position. It is operated automatically depending upon the engine speed. It has a fly wheel, clutch shaft, clutch plate, pressure plate, bell crank lever and a centrifugal weight. The bell crank lever is fitted in to the pressure plate with the help of a lever is called bell crank lever. WORKING A simple diagram of a centrifugal clutch is shown in the above figure. When the engine speed increases, the centrifugal weight (A) fly off due to the centrifugal force. At the same time bell crank lever (B) presses the pressure plate(C) and the clutch plate (D) on the flywheel against the springs(G). This makes the clutch engaged. The torsion of spring (G) is designed for disengage the clutch below 500 r.p.m. So the power can't be transmit...

FOUR STROKE DIESEL ENGINE / COMPRESSION IGNITION (CI) ENGINE

FOUR STROKE DIESEL ENGINE Constructional details A four stroke diesel engine consists of a cylinder with its one end fitted with a cover and the other end left open. The cover is provided with the inlet and exhaust valves. These inlet and exhaust valves are opened and closed by mechanically operated cams. The fuel injector is fitted at the top of the cover to atomize the fuel. A piston carrying rings reciprocates inside the cylinder. The piston is connected to the crankshaft through a connecting rod and crank. It converts the reciprocating motion of the piston into rotary motion. WORKING Suction or intake stroke Suction stroke starts when the piston is at the top dead centre and about to move downwards. At that time, the inlet valve is opened and exhaust valve is closed. Due to the downward movement of the pisto, partial vaccum is created inside the cylinder. (i.e. the volume in the cylinder increases while the Pressure decreases). Due to the pressure difference between the...
