PROPORTIONING VALAVE - 20

PROPORTIONING VALAVE  Proportioning valve different types of brakes are used on the front and rear of the vehicle (disc, drum) and different braking forces are required on the front and rear due to the weight transfer during braking. Usually due to weight transfer, more braking force is required at the front than at the rear.Applying equal amounts of braking force to the front and rear causes the rear wheels to lock quickly and try to accelerate. The propulsion valve helps to reduce the pressure of the fluid going to the rear brakes.

PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL VALVE-19

In vehicles using the tandem master cylinder, a warning lamp is usually provided on the instrument panel to alert the driver if any part of the brakes fails. Pictured is a switch that operates the warning lamp and a differential valve. If the fluid is pumped out of both chambers when the driver presses the brake pedal, the plunger in the valve rests in the center. This time the warning lamp will be switched off. But when the pressure in any chamber disappears, the plunger in the valve moves to that side. At this time the switch comes on due to the movement of the plunger and the warning lamp illuminates. WHEEL CYLINDER -18

CONSTRUCTION Above is a picture of a wheel cylinder. It will have two spring loaded aluminum pistons and rubber cups. Rubber cups are provided to prevent leakage of hydraulic fluid entering the wheel cylinder. In addition, the spring provided between the pistons are attached to the piston. The slots for connecting the ends of the brake shoe to the piston are provided on the sides of the piston. And  Dust covers are provided on both sides of wheel cylinder to prevent dust and dirt from entering. The wheel cylinder also has a bleeder screw for brake bleeding. WORKING When the driver applies the brakes, the compressed fluid from the master cylinder enters the cylinder through the inlet hole. Then the pistons move along with the rubber cups due to the pressure. This way the brake shoes pull away from the retractor springs and make the brakes possible. When the driver shifts his foot from the brake pedal, the pressure in the line decreases and the pistons move inward due to ...

TANDEM MASTER CYLINDER-17

The reliability of a tandem master cylinder is higher than that of a standard master cylinder. The fluid is pumped through two outlets for two pairs of wheels. Thus a brake on both wheels works efficiently without losing the entire brake if the brakes are lost on any one wheel.   Above is a picture of a tandem master cylinder. Normally when the pedal is pressed (when there are no faults) the brake fluid will reach the same pressure on all four wheels. But if the front wheels fail, the second piston moves freely forward and hits the stopper. But after this the fluid between the first and second pistons is compressed and pumped to operate the rear brakes. Similarly, if the rear wheels fail, the first piston moves freely and hits the second piston. This is followed by a second when the two pistons move forward together The fluid in the front of the piston is compressed and the brakes on the front wheels are applied. In some vehicles the connection in the large compression cham...

HAND / PARKING BRAKE -14

HAND BRAKE / PARKING BRAKE Hand or parking brakes operate independently of standard foot brakes. Such brakes are used on slopes and other parking and other emergency situations. The same brake shoes used for running foot brakes are used for parking brakes. Special shoes are used for parking brakes on some types of vehicles Mechanical type brakes are used as hand brakes. Parking brakes are provided on the rear brakes of most types of vehicles. The handbrake lever is mounted on the side of the driver's seat. Pictured is a parking back system. The lever moves freely from the ratchet when the driver pulls the lever by pressing the button provided on the brake lever. Thus the primary cable operates the brake compensators. As a result of the brake compensators pulling the secondary cables, a special mechanism operated by the parking brakes pushes the brake shoes against the drum. This makes the break possible.

HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM-15

HYDRAULIC BRAKES Hydraulic brakes operate according to Pascal's law. Pascal's law explains that the pressure exerted on a liquid in a vessel is equal to that on the inner surface of the vessel. Construction  The diagram above shows a hydraulic brake system. The master cylinder is connected to the caliper on the front wheel by steel pipes and to the wheel cylinder on the rear wheel. Flexible hoses are also used in the brake circuit to accommodate the movement of the axle. Working When the driver presses the brake pedal, the master cylinder compresses the fluid and delivers it through pipelines to the rear wheel cylinders and front wheel calipers. The fluid reaching the wheel cylinders pushes the pistons to either side. This movement of the pistons pushes the brake shoes ourwards and activates the rear brakes. When the fluid reaches the front caliper, it moves its piston and friction pad against the disc and activates the front brakes. Most of the vehicles use hydraulic brakes as ...

LEADING AND TRAILING SHOE-07

In drum braking systems,  the leading shoe is one that rotates in the direction of the drum.   The trailing shoe is on the other side of the assembly, and pulls away from the rotating surface . Leading-trailing shoe braking systems are just as capable of stopping reverse motion as they are at stopping forward

BRAKE SYSTEM (Function)-01

The main function of the brake system is to reduce the speed of a vehicle. By pressing on the brake pedal, the brake pads compress against the rotation of brake drum or disc attached to the wheel, which then forces the vehicle to slow down due to friction. Here the mechanical energy converted into heat energy.

EXTERNAL CONTRACTING BRAKE-05

External contracting brakes are mainly used in large machines and old type engines. It consists of a brake band, brake shoe and a drum. In operation, the brake band (or shoe) of an external contracting brake is tightened around the rotating drum by moving the brake lever. The brake band is made of comparatively thin, flexible steel, shaped to fit the drum, with a frictional lining riveted to the inner surface. This flexible band cannot withstand the high pressure required to produce the friction needed to stop a heavily loaded or fast-moving vehicle, but it works well as a parking brake or hold brake. Figure  shows an external contracting brake. The brake band is anchored opposite the point where the pressure is applied. In addition to supporting the band, the anchor allows adjustment of the brake lining clearance. Other adjusting screws and bolts are provided at the ends of the band.

MECHANICAL BRAKE SYSTEM-13

Drum brakes are used as mechanical brakes. The brake shoes located inside the drum are secured to the drum by a tractor spring. The brake shoes are fitted with a cam or toggle lever. When the brake pedal is pressed, the movement reaches the cam through the link rod and the lever. When the cam turns, the shoes are pushed in against the pressure of the retractor spring, which causes the drum to brake. Above is a picture of the linkages required to operate the mechanical brakes on all four wheels. One drawback is that this method does not allow for equal braking on all four wheels.

SWINGING CALIPER TYPE DISC BRAKE-10

In this type of disc brake, the caliper is fitted by using a fulcrum. When the driver press the brake pedal the piston moves forward by the pressure of fluid. In this time the friction pad engages the disc or rotor and stops the rotation of disc. It causes the caliper moves backwards centralize the fulcrum pin.

INTERNAL EXPANDING BRAKE-06

In this braking system the brake shoes are mounted inside of brake drum and the lower ends of brake shoes are connected with help of anchor pins and brake carrier plate. Based on this the movement of brake shoe is positioned. In between the upper ends of brake shoes one brake cam is mounted. Brake pedal is located at the right side corner of the driver’s leg. When the brake pedal is pressed, a long rod which is connected with the brake cams in the four brake carrier plate simultaneously are expanded inside the brake drum which causes friction that stops the rotating wheel. When the brake pedal is released, the brake cam is brought to its original position. The brake shoes are also brought to their original positions at the same time without touching the brake drum due to the spring’s compressive force. Hence the wheels on the brake drum rotate immediately without any friction

INTERNAL EXPANDING TYPE DRUM BRAKE-04

DRUM BRAKE: It consists of a brake drum, which is a strong aluminium or iron casting and is fixed solidly to each wheel. Inside the brake drum are the brake shoes, faced on the outside with the friction material, known as the brake lining. A pair of springs, called pull-off springs, hold the brake shoes just clear of the inside of the rotating drum. how many bends and twists it has. To operate the brakes, the shoes are forced apart so that they touch the inside of the drum. The hand-brake cable, when pulled, levers the two brake shoes apart at the bottom, forcing them into contact with the inside of the brake drum. Cables were once used to operate the foot brake as well, but in a modern car the brakes are invariably operated by a hydraulic system. This is based on the principle that if you apply pressure to one end of a pipe containing a liquid, an equal pressure will push liquid out of the other end of the pipe, no matter how many bends and twists it has.

SLIDING CALIPER TYPE DISC BRAKE-11

SLIDING CALIPER TYPE . - The sliding caliper type disc brake is mounted in a slot in the caliper adapter. It is a variation of the floating caliper, using a single piston and operating on the same principle, whereby the piston applies pressure to one brake pad and the movable caliper applies pressure to the other. This design has two major sections - the sliding caliper and the caliper adapter (anchor plate). Each has two angular machined surfaces: this is where the sliding contacts come into play. The machined surfaces of the caliper housing slide on the mated surfaces of the caliper adapter when the brakes are applied.

DISC BRAKE-09

Disc Brake : The disc brake consists of a  steel disc, fitted behind the wheel. A fixed caliper carries two slave cylinders, each with a piston which forces the brake pad against the disc, which is gripped firmly between the two pads. Overheating is less likely because the whole thing – the disc and both pads – is mounted in the open air where it is cooled directly by air blowing over it. Other advantages are the ease with which worn pads can be renewed compared with the brake shoes in drum brakes, and built-in resistance to water; any water on the disc is immediately flung off by centrifugal force.
