HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM-15

HYDRAULIC BRAKES

Hydraulic brakes operate according to Pascal's law. Pascal's law explains that the pressure exerted on a liquid in a vessel is equal to that on the inner surface of the vessel.

Construction

The diagram above shows a hydraulic brake system. The master cylinder is connected to the caliper on the front wheel by steel pipes and to the wheel cylinder on the rear wheel. Flexible hoses are also used in the brake circuit to accommodate the movement of the axle.

Working

When the driver presses the brake pedal, the master cylinder compresses the fluid and delivers it through pipelines to the rear wheel cylinders and front wheel calipers. The fluid reaching the wheel cylinders pushes the pistons to either side. This movement of the pistons pushes the brake shoes ourwards and activates the rear brakes. When the fluid reaches the front caliper, it moves its piston and friction pad against the disc and activates the front brakes.
Most of the vehicles use hydraulic brakes as service bikes and mechanical brakes as parking brakes. In hydraulic brake system A small amount of pressure is maintained even when free. This is to prevent air from entering the wheel cylinders and pipelines when the brakes are free.

CENTRIFUGAL CLUTCH

MAIN PARTS 1. Fly wheel 2. Clutch plate 3. Clutch shaft 4. Pressure plate 5. Clutch spring 6. Bell crank lever 7. Centrifugal weight 8. Crank shaft CONSTRUCTION In this type of clutch, centrifugal force is used to keep the clutch in the engaged position. It is operated automatically depending upon the engine speed. It has a fly wheel, clutch shaft, clutch plate, pressure plate, bell crank lever and a centrifugal weight. The bell crank lever is fitted in to the pressure plate with the help of a lever is called bell crank lever. WORKING A simple diagram of a centrifugal clutch is shown in the above figure. When the engine speed increases, the centrifugal weight (A) fly off due to the centrifugal force. At the same time bell crank lever (B) presses the pressure plate(C) and the clutch plate (D) on the flywheel against the springs(G). This makes the clutch engaged. The torsion of spring (G) is designed for disengage the clutch below 500 r.p.m. So the power can't be transmit...

FOUR STROKE DIESEL ENGINE / COMPRESSION IGNITION (CI) ENGINE

FOUR STROKE DIESEL ENGINE Constructional details A four stroke diesel engine consists of a cylinder with its one end fitted with a cover and the other end left open. The cover is provided with the inlet and exhaust valves. These inlet and exhaust valves are opened and closed by mechanically operated cams. The fuel injector is fitted at the top of the cover to atomize the fuel. A piston carrying rings reciprocates inside the cylinder. The piston is connected to the crankshaft through a connecting rod and crank. It converts the reciprocating motion of the piston into rotary motion. WORKING Suction or intake stroke Suction stroke starts when the piston is at the top dead centre and about to move downwards. At that time, the inlet valve is opened and exhaust valve is closed. Due to the downward movement of the pisto, partial vaccum is created inside the cylinder. (i.e. the volume in the cylinder increases while the Pressure decreases). Due to the pressure difference between the...
