TWO STROKE PETROL ENGINE

INTRODUCTION

The two stroke cycle engine was invented by Dugald Clark in the year 1878. For two stroke engine, all the events (i.e., suction, compression, expansion and exhaust) are completed in two strokes of the piston or one revolution (360°) of the crank shaft. In one revolution of crank shaft there will be one power stroke. This is also called as Clark cycle engine.

MAIN PARTS

1. Inlet port
2. Exhaust port
3. Transfer port
4. Spark plug
5. Piston
6. Cylinder
7. Connecting rod
8. Crank shaft

CONSTRUCTION

In two stroke petrol engine, the main parts are piston cylinder, spark plug inlet port, exhaust port and transfer port. The cylinder walls are provided with three ports.the exhaust port, below which the inlet port is present and transfer port is provided opposite to the inlet and exhaust port. The inlet port is used to push the air- fuel mixture into the crank case. Transfer port is used to transfer the air- fuel mixture from the crank case to the combustion chamber. After combustion the exhaust port sends the burnt gases to the atmosphere. Valves and valve operating mechanism is not used in this engine.

A piston carrying rings reciprocates inside the cylinder. The piston is connected to the crankshaft through a connecting rod and crank. The piston is made to crown or deflector on top side which deflects the fresh charge upwards and forces out the burnt gases through exhaust port. These engines are air cooled by means of cooling fins arranged around the outer surface of the cylinder. A spark plug is provided on the top side of the cylinder head to ignite the air fuel mixture at the appropriate time.

Thus the crank shaft and connecting rod convert the reciprocating motion of the piston into rotary motion. In one side of the crank shaft, flywheel is mounted with the ring gear. The ring gear is used to start the engine initially with the help of self starter.

WORKING PRINCIPLE

Upward Stroke (suction and compression)

During the upward stroke, the piston moves from (BDC) bottom dead centre to (TDC) top dead centre. The previously sucked air-fuel mixture enters the cylinder through transfer port. Now the piston moves up further and closes the transfer port first and also exhaust port. Due to the upward movement of piston, the charged air-fuel mixture is compressed. The ratio of compression ranges from 7:1 to 15:1 at the end of the stroke.
When the piston is nearly at top dead centre, the charge (air fuel mixture) is ignited by a spark plug and combustion takes place. At the same time, the lower edge of the piston has opened the inlet port. A partial vacuum is created in crank case (ie. Pressure in crank case is less than atmospheric pressure), so that the air fuel mixture from the Carburettor is sucked into the crank case.

Downward stroke (expansion and exhaust)

This type Due to the combustion of charge, the hot high pressure gas expands and the piston moves from top dead centre to bottom dead centre. So the power is produced. In this stroke, power is given to the crank shaft and stored in fly wheel. During its downward movement the piston first opens both exhaust and transfer ports and then closes inlet port. Due to downward movement of piston the charge already in crank case is compressed and enters cylinder soon after transfer port opens. This types of compressing charge in crank case is known as crank case compression.

The freshly entered charge from crank case to the engine cylinder (top of the piston) pushes hot burnt gases outside through exhaust port. This is known as scavenging operation. In two stroke engine the piston is given some specific shape (as shown in figure) known as crowning. A crown or deflector is also used to prevent the mixing of fresh charge into the burnt gas going out directly to the atmosphere through exhaust port. However, some of the fresh charges mixed with burnt gases are also exhausted into the atmosphere before ignition. This reduces the thermal efficiency of the engine.

When the piston reaches bottom , the piston moves upward again. During this movement, piston first closes the transfer port and then the exhausts port. The compression of the charge takes place till it reaches top dead centre. When the piston is nearly at top dead centre, the inlet port opens and fresh charge enters into the crank case. After the compression, combustion of charge takes place and cycle is repeated.

Summary

Since this engine requires only two strokes to complete one cycle, it is called as two stroke engine. The crank shaft makes only one revolution to complete the cycle. The power is developed during each revolution of the crank shaft. Hence this engine is widely used in two and three wheelers.

CENTRIFUGAL CLUTCH

MAIN PARTS 1. Fly wheel 2. Clutch plate 3. Clutch shaft 4. Pressure plate 5. Clutch spring 6. Bell crank lever 7. Centrifugal weight 8. Crank shaft CONSTRUCTION In this type of clutch, centrifugal force is used to keep the clutch in the engaged position. It is operated automatically depending upon the engine speed. It has a fly wheel, clutch shaft, clutch plate, pressure plate, bell crank lever and a centrifugal weight. The bell crank lever is fitted in to the pressure plate with the help of a lever is called bell crank lever. WORKING A simple diagram of a centrifugal clutch is shown in the above figure. When the engine speed increases, the centrifugal weight (A) fly off due to the centrifugal force. At the same time bell crank lever (B) presses the pressure plate(C) and the clutch plate (D) on the flywheel against the springs(G). This makes the clutch engaged. The torsion of spring (G) is designed for disengage the clutch below 500 r.p.m. So the power can't be transmit...

FOUR STROKE DIESEL ENGINE / COMPRESSION IGNITION (CI) ENGINE

FOUR STROKE DIESEL ENGINE Constructional details A four stroke diesel engine consists of a cylinder with its one end fitted with a cover and the other end left open. The cover is provided with the inlet and exhaust valves. These inlet and exhaust valves are opened and closed by mechanically operated cams. The fuel injector is fitted at the top of the cover to atomize the fuel. A piston carrying rings reciprocates inside the cylinder. The piston is connected to the crankshaft through a connecting rod and crank. It converts the reciprocating motion of the piston into rotary motion. WORKING Suction or intake stroke Suction stroke starts when the piston is at the top dead centre and about to move downwards. At that time, the inlet valve is opened and exhaust valve is closed. Due to the downward movement of the pisto, partial vaccum is created inside the cylinder. (i.e. the volume in the cylinder increases while the Pressure decreases). Due to the pressure difference between the...
